Reporting to the EHS Manager, the Occupational Hygienist will be responsible for developing and maintaining the Occupational Hygiene and control of hazardous substances programmes within the company. He/she will ensure that applicable standards and regulations related to occupational hygiene, control strategies and the control of hazardous substances, and in particular, activities such as management of occupational health risk, design and implementation of strategic exposure assessment projects and containment, REACh, CLP, management of SDS and PPE programmes, are implemented in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

The Occupational Hygienist provides technical support in the assessment and continuous improvements of health and safety systems and safe work practices, with a strong emphasis on the practical implementation of good industry practices within the facility operations. He/she will liaise with key customers, including corporate colleagues and facility's managers, supervisors and other colleagues to help develop implement and support the Occupational hygiene programme.

All employees must adhere and comply with the responsibilities included in the GSE Regulations. Other specific roles and responsibilities are defined in the GSE manuals, policies and procedures.

All employees must adhere and comply with cGMP requirements, including Quality manuals, policies and procedures.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

• Development, implementation and maintenance of occupational hygiene programmes and initiatives; this includes the design of OH strategy, prioritisation and undertaken of OH and chemical risk assessment and OH sampling and analysis of relevant data.

• Completion of a site wide Noise Survey and development of a Noise Map for the site.

• Carrying out tests on Breathing Air Quality across the site.

• Support REACh and CLP Labelling programmes.

• Support the development and implementation of the company OH Management System.

• Active role in the development of training packages and Standard Operating Procedures in line with the Company and Irish Regulatory standards.

• Monitoring site compliance with Occupational Hygiene standards.

• Development of exposure protection strategies including containment, PPE and other administrative controls.

• Development and management of SDS and hazard labelling programmes.

• Supporting and participating in plant, process and equipment engineering reviews.

• Communication of chemical hazard, monitoring and risk assessment information.

• Overseeing the site PPE programme.

• Development and delivery of relevant training and awareness programmes.

• Supporting other programmes such as incident investigation, audits and inspections.

• Preparation of appropriate documentation and recordkeeping.

Experience: (Essential/Desirable)

Minimum of three years operating in a similar position in the pharmaceutical industry, or other technically complex, highly regulated environment. Minimum of five years would be desirable.

Good knowledge of H&S legislation and in particular Occupational Hygiene principles.

Experience in the provision of H&S training.


Education: (Essential/Desirable)

• Minimum of Diploma in chemical, biological or physical sciences.

• Minimum of Post-Graduate Certificate in Occupational Hygiene.

• Member of professional organisation such as the Occupational Hygiene Society of Ireland.

• Registered Safety Practitioner (RSP).

• Be able to work on own initiative and provide leadership and direction to drive continuous improvement.

• Demonstrated ability to make sound, risk-based decisions.

• Clear written expression evidenced by well-structured and presented reports.

• Working knowledge of information management systems such as MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.

• Experience using Occupational Hygiene equipment.

• Training ability and/or presentation skills.

• Research capabilities in H&S issues.
